How to Replace a Door Lockset: Step-by-Step DIY Guide | Tricks and Tips for Life

The first thing you need to do to remove the lock set is to disassemble it. You disassemble the lock set simply by taking the two screws out of the doorknob; the screws are located on either side of the doorknob on one side of the door. Once you remove the screws simply pull the two apart gently for both interior and exterior doors. Now you need to remove the latch assembly. If you look inside the hole where the door knob was, you will see the latch assembly. To remove this latch assembly you have to take the two screws out from the edge of the door. Once you remove the two screws you simply slide the latch assembly.
If you are also replacing a deadbolt, repeat the steps above, but instead of a doorknob, you are replacing the deadbolt.

Check the backset, measure the distance from the edge of the door to the exact center of the main hole. This is either 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches. Most new latches are adjustable, twist and pull the latch to match your door's measurement. Now insert the new latch assembly into the door the same way you took the old one out. Make sure you face a curved part of the latch assembly towards the door frame. This is critical because if you don't you won't be able to close the door. Now simply install the new screws.

Now to install a new lockset you simply do the opposite of what you did when you took it apart. Slide to two halves together making sure the lock for the key if there is one is on the outside portion of the door. Once again if you are also installing a deadbolt you will do the exact same thing as you did for the lockset.

The strike plate is a piece of metal that is on the door frame it's secures the door when you close it to the door frame. To remove and replace the strike plate you simply remove the two screws and the metal plate. When you install it make sure the curbside faces away from the door and towards the door frame. Then simply install the two screws that come with the package.

Once you have everything reassembled you're going to need to test the doorknob to make sure it's working properly. Simply turn the doorknob either way and make sure it turns; it should turn smoothly. You will also need to do the same thing using the key if you're installing the deadbolt. If everything appears to be working correctly, close the door and try to open it; if it opens, you're finished.
